Ollumia | Personal Colour Analysis FAQ, Kuala Lumpur
Section 01

How colour analysis actually works

The science, how we do it, and why it was built for Southeast Asian skin

Personal colour analysis is the systematic observation of how light and colour interact with an individual's skin under defined conditions. It focuses on measurable colour response rather than trends, personal preference, or aesthetic judgement.

Personal colour analysis works by observing how colour affects the appearance of the skin when placed near the face under controlled lighting. At Ollumia, a style curator guides you through a high-precision 492-hue diagnostic draping process, drawing from an internal library of over 20,000 developed colours.

No. Seasonal colour systems group individuals into fixed categories like Spring or Winter. Ollumia's methodology examines colour properties, Hue, Saturation, and Lightness, independently, allowing for individual variation that seasonal labels often miss.

Personal colour analysis is an analytical science. It identifies the rules of how colour behaves on your features. Styling, makeup, and wardrobe decisions are the practical applications of this data-driven framework.

Our analysis is maintained by Senior Style Curators and is based on Munsell colour theory, CIELAB, and CAM16 colour appearance models. By using spectrophotometric data and ISO-standard lighting, we provide a repeatable, data-driven assessment.

Inconsistency usually occurs when analysis is conducted under uncontrolled lighting or uses systems not designed for regional skin tones. Our methodology is grounded in first-hand experience with over 200 Southeast Asian client scans, allowing us to account for the specific reflectance and skin depths found in the region.

CRI 98 lighting provides near-perfect colour rendering by mimicking neutral daylight. Most indoor lighting (CRI 80 to 85) distorts colour perception, whereas our calibrated environment allows for the clearest possible observation of how colour interacts with your skin.

Skin depth and reflectance vary significantly. We measure each client's facial skin values using a spectrophotometric colourimeter to calibrate the lighting level for that specific session. This ensures that someone with deeper skin is not under-lit, and someone with lighter skin is not over-lit or washed out.

Yes. Our methodology was developed using regional data to handle the wide variation in skin depth found in Southeast Asia. The 492-hue diagnostic process ensures accuracy for Indian, Malay, Chinese, and mixed-heritage complexions.

Yes. Our HSL framework is highly effective for selecting traditional garments. We analyse how colour properties interact with your features to ensure that intricate fabrics, such as lace for a Baju Kebaya or silk for a Cheongsam, to complement your skin tone without overpowering it.

The analysis provides clear guidance for high-chroma garments like the Saree or Punjabi Suit. We identify the optimal saturation and lightness levels for your features, helping you choose base fabrics and embroidery that maintain facial clarity and balance.

Personal colour analysis is essential for choosing a Tudung or Hijab because the fabric frames the face directly. Our style curators explain how different hues interact with your skin clarity, allowing you to select head coverings that provide a natural, harmonious glow.

When and why to do this

Weddings, events, capsule wardrobes, and shopping smarter in Malaysian malls

Yes. Personal colour analysis is most effective when done before finalising major colour decisions. It helps guide choices around fabrics, accessories, and styling details to ensure your selections work with your skin tone under controlled observation.

A minimum of two to three months is recommended for using your results for planning and coordination. This allows sufficient time for attire selection, fittings, and coordinating with photographers or makeup artists based on your identified palette.

Yes. The analysis provides a consistent reference that helps different outfits remain cohesive across multiple events. This ensures a balanced presentation whether for an indoor venue, outdoor ceremony, or professional photography.

Knowing your colour properties simplifies shopping by allowing you to filter options more efficiently. This reduces buyer's remorse from purchasing items that look different under warm-tinted store lighting, such as those in Pavilion or Mid Valley, than they do in daily wear.

Yes. Personal colour analysis provides a stable colour reference that allows different items to work together cohesively. This supports a more efficient, versatile wardrobe and reduces the likelihood of impulsive, trend-driven purchases that remain unused.

Your session, before and during

Where we are, how to prepare, what happens in the room, and what to expect on the day
Getting ready

Our flagship studio is located at CT2-18-02, Corporate Tower 2, Pavilion Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur.

Each session begins with a spectrophotometric scan to calibrate the lighting. This is followed by a structured 492-hue diagnostic draping where your style curator explains the why behind every colour interaction.

Yes. Group sessions are available for up to 12 people and are ideal for bridal parties, corporate teams, and special events. Each individual is analysed separately under controlled conditions to ensure accuracy.

Please arrive bare-faced with no makeup or sunscreen so we can take accurate skin measurements. Wear a light-coloured, neutral top and avoid coloured contact lenses, as these can affect the analysis. Please also let us know in advance if you have any known allergies to cosmetic or skincare products, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have any medical conditions or physical limitations relevant to your participation. This allows us to prepare your session with your comfort and safety in mind. You can reach us at findclarity@ollumia.com.

Please tell your style curator straight away. We will adjust immediately. Your comfort is our priority throughout.

On the day

We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your session starts. Our studio is within Pavilion Damansara Heights, and there are building access and registration steps that take a few minutes. Arriving early means your session can begin on time and without any stress.

We hold your slot for up to 15 minutes past your scheduled start time. After that, unfortunately we are unable to admit you, as it affects the session experience for everyone involved. If something exceptional happens on the day, please contact us immediately at findclarity@ollumia.com, depending on where we are in the session, we may be able to offer a same-day transfer to another slot, subject to availability and the applicable rescheduling fee.

Group sessions accommodate up to 12 participants. The person who makes the booking is responsible for sharing these terms with the rest of the group ahead of the session, as all attendance, punctuality, and conduct requirements apply equally to everyone.

In the room

Personal photos are welcome during the private moments of your individual consultation. Your style curator will let you know when it is a good time. We do ask that you avoid photographing or recording other clients at any point.

We may ask whether you would be happy for us to take professional photos or video for our marketing. This is entirely optional, there is no pressure either way. If you say yes, you can withdraw your consent in writing at any time before we use the material commercially.

Unauthorised recording, particularly of other clients, is taken seriously. It will result in immediate removal from the session without refund, and depending on the nature of the recording, we may pursue further action under Malaysian law.
