About the Studio Environment and Setup

Built for
accurate
observation.

Colour response can only be observed reliably when changes in appearance can be attributed to colour rather than to uncontrolled variation in the environment. The studio is purpose-built to hold those variables constant.

Environment and Setup

Controlled conditions.
Reliable results.

In everyday settings, lighting changes, surrounding colours interfere, and viewing conditions shift from moment to moment. When these variables are not held constant, differences in appearance can occur without any change in colour, making comparison unreliable.

For this reason, the studio is purpose-built to minimise visual interference. Surrounding surfaces are neutral and consistent, ambient colour contamination is removed, and viewing conditions remain fixed throughout each session.

These controls allow differences in appearance to be traced back to colour interaction rather than environmental variation. The aim is not to recreate everyday lighting, but to create conditions stable enough for accurate comparison.

Lighting Control and Calibration

Lighting is a
diagnostic variable.

Sessions are conducted under controlled lighting that is calibrated for each individual. Lighter skin reflects more light and can wash out under strong illumination. Darker skin absorbs more light and needs higher illumination to show detail.

Lighting levels are adjusted in a stable, evenly diffused manner so contrast and detail remain readable across this range.

Lighting calibration and diffusion design were developed with IAD-certified lighting engineers so illumination remains uniform and controlled rather than directional or compensatory.

Separation of Learning and Observation

Two distinct spaces.
One clear process.

The studio is organised into distinct spaces for learning and observation. Explanation and orientation take place before any diagnostic testing begins - this allows the structure of the session to be explained without introducing distraction into the observation process.

Colour observation itself is conducted separately in the analyst rooms. Once testing begins, the session follows a structured sequence so explanation and interaction do not interfere with observation.

Space 01

Enlightenment Bar

Orientation, explanation and session briefing take place here before any diagnostic testing begins. Colour theory, process structure and what to expect are explained without interfering with observation.

Space 02

Analyst Rooms

Dedicated rooms for systematic colour testing. Fixed seating, neutral surfaces, controlled draping setup. All 152 or 492 diagnostic hues are introduced under identical parameters.

Analyst Rooms and Diagnostic Setup

Designed for
systematic testing.

Diagnostic colours are designed digitally using CAM16 and CIELAB colour models, then produced and measured against CIELAB values using colour-measurement devices.

These colours are introduced one at a time under the same conditions, allowing responses to be compared directly across repeated introductions. Each colour is observed under identical parameters - similar colours produce similar responses, different colours produce different responses. These relationships only become visible when environmental variables are held constant.

The rooms use neutral surfaces, a fixed seating position, and a controlled draping setup so observed changes in appearance are attributable to colour interaction rather than shifting context. Equipment is selected for functional consistency and diagnostic reliability.

The Enlightenment Bar

Where the session
begins.

Every session opens at the Enlightenment Bar - a dedicated orientation space separate from the analyst rooms. Here, the session structure, the diagnostic process and what to expect are explained before any colour testing begins.

For group bookings and B2B engagements, the Enlightenment Bar serves as the social and educational hub of the studio.

Group Bookings and Studio Use

The studio,
reserved for you.

Outside of individual diagnostic sessions, the studio may be reserved for small group engagements - private brand sessions, bridal gatherings, or B2B discussions. In these cases, the studio is booked as a whole, with the Enlightenment Bar used for social or educational purposes.

Diagnostic colour analysis may be scheduled separately as part of the programme where appropriate. When conducted, analysis follows the same sequencing, setup, and controlled conditions as individual sessions.

This structure allows group use of the studio while preserving the integrity of diagnostic observation.
